Medical psychology deals with topics of immediate relevance to medicine, such as doctor/patient communication, disease management, psychosomatic correlations, health promotion, rehabilitation, as well as aspects of developmental psychology and the issues and problems of individual life stages. Although established as an independent discipline, medical psychology is closely linked to psychotherapy, clinical psychology, social psychology and medical sociology.
The Department of Medical Psychology was founded in 1981. Its first full professor was Erwin Ringel, a worldwide pioneer of suicide research in Austria and psychosomatic medicine. Since the implementation of the new medical curriculum the department is mainly engaged in teaching and curricular development, especially in the fields of health communication. Furthermore Medical psychology is integrated thematically into numerous blocks of the Medical Curriculum Vienna (MCW) and into the planning an coordination of skills teaching.
