The field of general practice and family medicine covers the entire sphere of human life, the detection of illness, the treatment of patients and the promotion of health for everyone, regardless of their demographics and type of health disorder. Special attention is devoted to the early detection of life-threatening diseases and processes, preventative medicine and the long-term care of patients and families in their social and cultural environment. General Practice is of special benefit for chronically-ill persons or persons with multimorbidity since no other discipline focuses on the whole person in her or his specific setting.
An important role for general practitioners is the integration of medical, psychological and social measures for their patients in close collaboration with other health-care professionals and health-care institutions. The distinctive aspect of their work lies in the synthesis of these functions and their application to all patients. Its efficient fulfilment relies on the unique doctor/patient relationship which characterises the profession.
One of the functions of the sub-unit is to create a nationwide primary-care network and the establishment of a direct link between university institutions and extramural resources. The goal is to facilitate the reciprocal flow of information, implementation stages and the translation of findings.
