The goal of social and preventive medicine is to investigate the interaction of social conditions, heath and disease. It is also described as the theory of and about health policy. Social medicine and its application (public health) uses findings from epidemiologal studies (the ‘news service’ of the health-care system) as a source of information and translates the findings of epidemiology into public health programmes in order to contribute to the promotion of public health. Social medicine is an independent discipline of non-clinical medicine and provides services for all areas of health care.
