Improving air quality in the last 50 years is a success story of most of the developed industrial countries, including Austria. But this also means that at increasingly lower exposures health effects could be shown, while previously due to the lack of even cleaner comparison settings these effects remained undetected. Despite the numerous studies and diverse scientific findings some issues of great practical relevance are still unclear: What components in the pollutant mix are particularly harmful and should be urgently avoided? Which groups of people are particularly vulnerable and in need of protection? Is it possible to provide better quantitative effect estimates as an objective basis for decision making by policy and the society? How do technological changes and political targets (for example in the field of climate protection) impact on air quality?
