Noise and Health

Noise can affect health, well-being and performance of people in a variety of ways. This concerns both occupational and the often underestimated environmental noise. According to WHO estimates, at least one million healthy years of life are lost because of noise (ischemic heart disease, sleep disorders, etc.) per year in Western Europe.

The department has been dealing with the effects of environmental and occupational noise for decades. It conducts research on this topic, but also develops basic strategies for legal noise protection, compiles guidelines for noise assessment in collaboration with other experts, draws up medical expert opinions on health-related noise effects and informs politics and the population.
