Jürgen Degenfellner is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Epidemiology and holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Statistics and Business Mathematics from the Vienna University of Technology.
His Master’s thesis “Analysis of Bee Hive Weights Using Robust Methods” was carried out at the Institute of Statistics and Mathematical Methods in Economics with the aim to provide novel insights into constructing indicators for detecting deviating bee behavior in multiple hive systems.
His Bachelor thesis “Competing Serotypes in an SIR epidemic model” was carried out at the Institute for Analysis and Scientific Computing and discusses the interaction of competing serotypes in a population with varying parameters using agent based modeling.
Currently he is working with data from the Austrian Sleep Survey 2017, Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and UK Biobank. The topic of his dissertation is the creation and validation of a multi-polygenic risk score for shift work tolerance and the improvement of genetic prediction of breast cancer risk. Funded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences for 3 years (DOC Fellowship). The DOC Fellowship Programme offers funding for highly qualified doctoral candidates in all areas of research.
