April 2022 - Despite the accumulating evidence that price policy and taxation are striking strategies to reduce tobacco consumption, raising taxes is the measure with the least adoption and improvement worldwide. According to the WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic 2021, only 13% of the world’s population are living in countries imposing appropriate tax-rates. Despite the implementation of strong smoke-free laws in 2019, the Austrian smoking prevalence is still higher compared to many other European countries. In this context, and also regarding the recent tobacco tax increase in Germany as well as the price increases in Austria, this paper is highly relevant not only to improve tobacco control in Austria, but also to encourage other countries worldwide to use price policy and taxation in order to reduce smoking rates effectively!
